On Friday, October 13, at 2:00 PM, the Faculty of Medicine at Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) held a poster exhibition on the "Impact of Climate Change on Human Health" in the lobby of Building R.
Assistant Professor Olivia Monteiro (right) and second-year medical student Chi-Him Lee (left) opened the exhibition.
Faculty members and students attended the exhibition.
The exhibition aimed to raise awareness among faculty and students about climate change and its impact on human health. Under the guidance of Assistant Professor Olivia Monteiro, 39 second-year students from the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program presented their posters and participated in a discussion session in the Building R lobby.
The students worked in groups to create eight posters, each addressing a different aspect of climate change's impact on health, including: (1) Factors affecting health due to climate change, (2) The impact of climate change on respiratory diseases, (3) The impact of climate change on cardiovascular diseases, (4) The impact of climate change on infectious diseases, (5) The effect of climate change on antibiotic resistance, (6) The impact of climate change on food supply and nutrition, (7) Excess mortality caused by climate change, and (8) What can we do?
Assistant Professor Olivia Monteiro emphasized that the exhibition allowed students to share their work, engage in discussions, and exchange ideas with the attendees, fostering their awareness of the community's role in addressing this global challenge. She highlighted the various effects of climate change, including rising temperatures, changes in rainfall patterns, increased intensity and frequency of extreme weather events, and rising sea levels, all of which threaten our health by affecting food, water, air, and the occurrence of extreme weather events.
Medical students explained their posters to attendees and engaged in discussions.
