Introduction

The simulation centre, known as the Center of Excellence for Medical Professional Development at the Faculty of Medicine, MUST, deploys a wide range of advanced tools and equipment to create lifelike clinical scenarios for a variety of purposes. These include high-fidelity manikins, both haptic and non-haptic virtual reality simulation devices, part-task trainers, models, a 3D VR digital autopsy desk, ultrasound machines, and authentic medical equipment. By utilising these resources, the centre is able to provide comprehensive training in basic and advanced skills, education, simulated patient interactions and quality improvement initiatives. Besides, the centre has developed programs that allow simulations to be conducted in a measurable and objective manner, benefiting both medical students and postgraduate trainees.

Simulation-based education at the centre creates a risk-free environment where medical students can learn how to diagnose and treat a variety of medical and surgical conditions in a safe and supportive setting. This forms an important part of skills training, such as cannulation, central line insertion, suturing, male and female pelvic examinations, vital signs and ECG monitoring, airway management, and basic to advanced life support training. Our advanced simulation manikins (neonatal, baby, and adult) have realistic breath, pulses and heart sounds, pupils that can dilate and physiological responses to treatment.

OSCE Examination Rooms

Our special clinical examination rooms are used for (OSCEs) Objective Structured Clinical Examinations whereby we create a clinical setting to allow medical students to interact with standardised patients to learn physical examination exercises and necessary communication skills. Interactions can be monitored in real time through single reflective glass for final assessments.

The Evolution of the Simulation Centre

The simulation centre facility was established in 2011 in Macau as part of the Faculty of Health Science, specifically to provide simulation training for medical education. Subsequently, the Faculty of Medicine was established in 2019. Since its inception, the centre has offered a wide range of skills development courses for undergraduate training, necessitating the raising of public and clinician awareness. At certification workshops and formal activities, attendees and the media were informed about the benefits of simulation training, particularly in improving the quality of patient care and reducing medical errors.

Our Facilities

The simulation equipment and clinical equipment available at the Center of Excellence for Medical Professional Development. The simulation equipment includes various types of manikins, trainers, simulators, and ultrasound machines that can mimic realistic clinical scenarios and procedures. The clinical equipment includes bed, tables, monitors, respiratory support devices, endotracheal tubes, defibrillators suturing kits, intravenous catheters, infusion system and ultrasound equipment. The text also mentions additional technical equipment such as an advanced video and audio system, smart TVs and portable smart TVs.

Accreditations

We are grateful that Mr Michael Lavelle Jones, the President of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) has been reviewing our standard since 2016. His unique perspectives and experience are vital for our centre which has been recognised by the RCSEd and fully accredited by the Chinese Medical Doctors Association (CMDA) since 2011. The honour of accreditation was bestowed by former Minister of Health Dr Huang Jifu on MUST campus.

Training Programs

These are some of the courses that we have successfully run in the past and are currently offering for medical students provide comprehensive skill training for both undergraduate and postgraduate professionals. We have been cautious in selecting partnerships with renowned institutes in the UK and the US, such as EAES, Massachusetts General Hospital, Bristol Hospital, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Notre Dame University of Australia, and others.
