Exhibition Venue

The exhibition was guided by Assistant Professors Simon Wing-Fai Mok and Io-Nam Wong and featured participation from over 150 second- to fifth-year undergraduate medical students enrolled in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program. These students took part in the "Medical Ethics, Humanities, and Law" course over three weeks. The course integrates arts and humanities into medical education, using various art forms—literature, poetry, drama, performance arts, and visual arts—to enhance skills in discerning nuances, sensitivity to language, understanding patient narratives, and improving clinical communication and observational skills. It also provided students with insights into four critical aspects of medicine: the doctor-patient relationship, self-awareness as a physician, relationships with colleagues, and the doctor’s role in society.

The two professors hoped that by encouraging medical students to create and appreciate personal artistic works, students would enhance their self-awareness, sharpen their observational skills related to visual analysis, touch, and shape, and improve their ability to express observations and make logical inferences. These skills would contribute to their holistic development, enabling them to better care for future patients.

Speech by Professor Manson Fok, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine

In his speech, Dean Manson Fok emphasized that the exhibition is an extension of the "Medical Ethics, Humanities, and Law" teaching module in the MBBS program. It aims to merge the worlds of art and medicine, exploring the profound connection between the healing arts and the complexities of the human condition. He encouraged students to express their ideas on various medical-related topics through peer discussions, painting, ceramics, and art displays. Through this, the program seeks to cultivate compassionate and empathetic doctors with a strong sense of care.

The exhibition featured 28 paintings and 21 ceramic works created by faculty and students from the second to fifth years of the MBBS program. The exhibited works varied in style, showcasing three-dimensional pieces related to medical education using ceramic materials. The creativity of the students was on full display, and their works received high praise from both faculty and students who attended the exhibition.
