To continue to nurture and train “Tomorrow’s Doctors” for Macau, 31 of our first intake of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) fourth-year students will begin a seven-week clinical experience at Kiang Wu Hospital from 1st September.

In preparation for this clinical experience, Kiang Wu Hospital held a symposium at the Lotus Hall of Dr. Henry Y.T.Fok Specialist Medical Center at 3pm on 30th August 2022. Attendees from Kiang Wu Hospital included Dr. Xuebin Xie (Deputy Director of Kiang Wu Hospital), Dr. Pengbin Li (Deputy Director of Kiang Wu Hospital), Dr. Zhengfeng Lu (Director of Teaching and Research Department), Dr. Hong Yu (Deputy Chief Consultant of Obstetrics and Gynecology), Dr. Chen Yan (Deputy Chief Consultant of Pediatrics), Dr. Hong Sin U (Deputy Chief Consultant of Ophthalmology), Dr. Leong Nga Cheng (Deputy Chief Consultant of Dermatology Department), and Dr. Hou Weijian (attending physician of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery). From MUST Faculty of Medicine, Dean Professor Manson Fok, Professor Brian Tomlinson and Associate Professor Eric Luis Adiwati attended the symposium together with 29 MBBS students.

The symposium was chaired by Dr. Zhengfeng Lu, director of Teaching and Research Department of Kiang Wu Hospital, who gave an introduction of the personnel, history, development status and organization of Kiang Wu Hospital. Deputy Director, Dr. Xuebin Xie welcomed the arrival of our MBBS students, and encouraged them to make full use of the clinical experience, study hard and ask more questions in order to lay a solid foundation for the future of Macau’s healthcare system. On behalf of the Faculty of Medicine, Dean Manson Fok expressed his gratitude to the Macau Kiang Wu Hospital for attaching great importance to the clinical training of our MBBS students, and the dedication of all the clinical instructors. He hoped that the students will strictly abide by the rules and regulations of the hospital, be open-minded and eager to learn, and complete the clinical experience with flying colors. Following the introduction, the clinical teaching staff from Kiang Wu Hospital had a discussion on the specifics of the clinical experience system. Our MBBS students were then given a tour of the inpatient and outpatient departments.

This clinical experience will last for seven weeks. Our MBBS students will get clinical experience in ophthalmology, otolaryngology, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology and dermatology, as part of their senior clerkship training. They will observe how doctors apply theoretical knowledge in daily clinical practice for diagnosis and treatment of patients. Our MBBS students will also obtain experience in communication, history taking and examination. They will also gain valuable experience and develop critical thinking through discussion with clinical teachers during ward inspections. All of these will facilitate our MBBS students’ transition from student to doctor.
