Recently, the Academia Europaea announced the results of the 2025 election for new members. After a thorough review, 329 eminent scholars from various disciplines worldwide were selected. Founded in 1988, Academia Europaea is an initiative of various national academies, including the Royal Society of the United Kingdom, and academies from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Sweden. Headquartered in London, it serves the "EU Academy" as a statutory scientific advisor. As one of the most prestigious and influential scientific organizations globally, Academia Europaea includes renowned scholars from the fields of natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and life sciences, representing the highest standards of scientific achievement in Europe. Distinguished non-European scientists can also be elected as foreign members, although they constitute less than 5% of the total membership, with higher selection criteria. Currently, Academia Europaea includes numerous top scholars, including 83 Nobel laureates, 15 Fields Medalists, and 6 Turing Award winners.
Chair Professor Zhang has made significant contributions to the fields of ophthalmology, medical artificial intelligence, oncology, molecular genetics, and precision medicine. He has published over 400 articles indexed in the Web of Science, with nearly 300 in top-tier journals such as Nature, Science, Cell, and the New England Journal of Medicine, accumulating over 80,000 citations and an H-index of 114. He holds more than 30 international invention patents. From 2019 to 2024, he has been recognized as one of the "Global Highly Cited Researchers" across multiple disciplines and has received several honors, including the Changjiang Scholar Award, the Fok Ying-Tung Prize - The World Outstanding Chinese Doctor Award, and the top ranking in ophthalmology in Greater China.
